Coordinated provincially by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development but operated through Nova Scotia's eight Regional Centres for Education, each with its own regional ordering portal. A related non-profit, Nourish Nova Scotia, administers the School Food Fund supporting breakfast/snack programming alongside the formal lunch program.
How it works
All children in schools offering the NSSLP can participate — no income test or application. Families order through their region's dedicated ordering portal. The program has served more than 12 million meals to Nova Scotia students since launching in 2024, with larger high-school portions and a shift to reusable packaging starting in 2026-27.
Nova Scotia has a signed National School Food Program agreement and 2025-2027 action plan providing federal cost-sharing; exact per-meal pricing and the precise provincial-versus-federal funding split were not confirmed in official sources reviewed.

A peer-reviewed Nova Scotia study of 5,853 Grade 5 students found students from food-insecure households had significantly poorer diet quality and worse psychosocial outcomes — including reduced quality of life and peer-relationship difficulties — compared with food-secure peers, effects present even at marginal food insecurity levels.
